If I have an idea for a sculpture I look for a specific size and shape of stone. Otherwise I study the stone from all angles to see what it might suggest to me. I usually sketch out a design from photographs to get the form firmly in my mind before starting.
This small piece of Italian Ice Alabaster, when polished, has a wonderful translucent quality. The shape, suggestive of a dolphin, was already in the stone before I began, so I decided to go with it. The top two photographs show the stone before I put any tools to it. The next two photographs show it when I had roughed the form out by saw, chisel and rasp. More photographs will be added as I progress with the sculpture.
